After an amazing nine-month campaign, it was a thrill to see the first election returns on Tuesday night. When the evening began, we were optimistic about our chances but expected the results to be close. Instead, we celebrated a resounding and decisive victory.
I’m excited by what this election says about our city and our region. I believe the size of our victory shows that the citizens of Seattle are hungry for positive ideas, fresh thinking, progressive values, and transparency and accountability. Tuesday’s vote makes clear that money matters less than ideas in this city, and that voters still base their decisions on who offers a stronger vision for how to make Seattle work better for all of its citizens.
I want to thank all of you for your hard work and support throughout this campaign. It took hundreds of people working together for many months to make this election victory possible. I’ve been so honored to see so many people contribute their time, their ideas, and their money to my campaign. I’m grateful to all of you for your help, and inspired by your belief in the profoundly American ideal that we can each make a difference through our willingness to work for change.
Now that we’ve won, the real work is just beginning. For the last nine months, you’ve supported me because you share my vision for a Seattle that provides affordable housing and good jobs for its citizens, great schools for its children, and a comprehensive transportation system that will enable us to move away from our dependence on cars. My goal is to bring greater accountability to the Seattle City Council combined with a focus on progressive values and innovative approaches to government based on smart incentives the lead to positive outcomes. I’ll be relentless when it comes to raising the tough questions about the deep-bore downtown tunnel to ensure that whatever the solution is to the Alaskan Way viaduct issue, that it is the best possible outcome for this city.
For the last nine months, I have been the beneficiary of your ideas and your hard work. I look forward to continuing to work with all of you to achieve our shared vision for this great city and I hope you will hold me accountable for making progress at every step of the way.
Thank you!

Thank heavens Seattle voters are so much more sophisticated and discerning than they were during the “Royer years!” Royer, Keep out! Thank you, Mr. O’Brien, and keep up the good work.
and we were honored to have ya’ll at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center for the election party! apparently the Stranger rated it the best election party, above all the big hotel parties even… so a big hurrah for community spaces!
