Issues

Seattle, I am honored to be your City Councilmember and I want to continue serving you. For the past two years on City Council, I have brought a passionate, progressive and yet pragmatic approach to the issues we face.
I want to continue fighting for a city where all of our children have access to the same opportunities growing up that I had. I want to continue fighting for a city world renowned for its leadership combating climate change.
My vision of Seattle is one of made up of the incredible and growing diversity of our communities, where amid this diversity, all communities are safe, healthy and thriving. I see a Seattle that is a model of economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and political transparency.
In my second term on City Council, my priorities will include:
Making Seattle affordable for all: Through smart housing policies, improved transportation options, and other changes, we can make Seattle a city where people can afford to live in the communities in which they work.
Creating great job opportunities: We can foster a business environment where companies can flourish and innovation can thrive by making smart investments in education, transportation, and housing.
Building a reliable transportation system: By prioritizing transit and improving the capacity of our existing roads, we can build a transportation infrastructure that enables people and freight to move quickly, efficiently, and reliably through town.
Investing in education: With the newly doubled Families & Education Levy, seattle demonstrated our commitment to a thriving pulic school system. I will work to ensure that money is focused on smart, equitable investments, so that every school in Seattle has the resources to meet the needs of our students, regardless of their zip code.
Sustainability and climate change: Seattle residents are at the cutting edge when it comes to their knowledge of climate change and their desire to live healthy, sustainable lives. In my second term, City Council will continue to lead the way in adopting policies that make Seattle a model for environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Minimizing the influence money in politics: The ongoing presidential election and the Occupy Movements around the country have elevated a national conversation on the role of money in politics. In Seattle this plays out by restricting opportunities to run for office to those who can raise the most money instead of those with the best ideas. I am committed to minimizing the role money plays in local elections and restoring our faith in a people-powered democracy.
